The Akanlahti reindeer herding cooperative is part of the Kuusamo reindeer marking district. The cooperative is located to the Posio (60 %), Kuusamo (35 %) and Taivalkoski (5 %) municipalities. The cooperative borders in north with Tolva, in east with Oivanki and Kallioluoma, in south with Hossa-Irni and Taivalkoski and in west with Posion Livo cooperatives.

12.7 % of the cooperative’s total area is state land and 87.3 % is owned by other landowners. There are no nature reserves, national parks or wilderness areas in the cooperative area.

The cooperative has six autumn round up fences: Kolomilampi, Suonperä, Aitalampi, Pitkälampi, Isokangas and Jokilampi. The calve markings are done in transferable fences.

There are only little amount of people living in the area and it is spread around the cooperative. There are not any bigger towns, but small villages such as Vasaraperä, Lohiranta, Kynsivaara and Jokilampi. Most of the herders live in these villages, mainly in Lohiranta and Jokilampi.
