Alakitka reindeer herding cooperative is part of the Kuusamo reindeer marking district. The cooperative is located to the northern part of Kuusamo municipality. The cooperative borders in east with Russian border, in south with Oivanki, in west with Tolva and in north with Salla cooperatives.

24.6 % of the cooperative’s total area is state land and 75.4 % is owned by other landowners. There is Oulanka National Park in the area that secures the availability of different types of lichens in the area. There is also Sukeri strict nature reserve in the area. Due to the closeness of the Russian border, there are lot of large carnivore in the area.

There are altogether four round up fences. In Rytinki, there is also a feeding fence next to it where reindeer can be kept and fed in case needed. A new autumn round up fence was build to Jäkälänmutka in 2010.

The biggest village in the area is Käylä. There are also people living in Vuotunki. There are lot of holiday cottages in the cooperative area. Most of the herders live in the Käylä area. Some live in the centre of Kuusamo or other villages.
