Hirvasniemi reindeer herding cooperative is part of the Salla reindeer marking district. The cooperative is located to the Kemijärvi (c. 65 %), Pelkosenniemi (c. 25 %) and Savukoski (c. 10 %) municipalities. The cooperative borders in west with Pyhä-Kallio, in north with Oraniemi, in east with Salla and in south with Timisjärvi cooperatives.

24.8 % of the cooperative’s total area is state land and 75.2 % is owned by other landowners. There are no national parks, reserve or wilderness areas in the cooperative area. Old forest can still be found in Ottovaara and it is part of Natura areas.

The important round up fences are in Isokylä, Soppela, Palomaa, Haukivaara and Seitavaara. There is also a fence in Hanhivaara that is used for calve marking.

Most of the herders live in villages: Soppela, Isokylä, Kallaanvaar, Joutsijärvi, Kostamo and Luusua. Nearly 80 % of the herders live in Soppela.
