Kolari reindeer herding cooperative is part of the Western reindeer marking district. The cooperative is located to the Kolari municipality. The cooperative borders in north with Muonio, in west with Alakylä and Jääskö, in south with Palojärvi and Orajärvi cooperatives and in west with Swedish border.
60.4 % of the cooperative’s total area is state land and 39.6 % is owned by other landowners. In the northern part of the cooperative there is a Teuravuoma-Kivijärvivuoma mire reserve area. The railway from Tornio to Kolari is located to the cooperative area. At the moment, the amount of traffic is manageable for the cooperative. If Pajala or Kolari mines will be opened, the situation changes as the traffic will multiply.
The most important round up fences of the cooperative are Kukkarolaki, Karkulainen, KArjalainen, Rantalehto, Vuolittaja, Ylinenvaara, Ruostevaara, Ruokovaara, Hinttarova, Kaivoslaki and Otosmaa. The cooperative has pasture and border fences in the southern and western parts.
The most significant villages are Kolari, Vaattojärvi and Sieppijärvi. The herders live evenly around the cooperative area.
