Kuukas reindeer herding cooperative is part of the Itäkemijoki reindeer marking district. The cooperative is located to the Ranua and Pudasjärvi municipalities. The cooperative borders in north with Narkaus, in northeast with Niemelä, in southeast with Pudasjärven Livo, in south with Ikonen and in west with Oijärvi and Isosydänmaa cooperatives.
45.1 % of the cooperative’s total area is state land and 54.9 % is owned by other landowners. Despite the fact that Ranua is located to the centre of the cooperative, it only takes a small portion of the total area. The cooperative area borders with Litokaira protection area in west. Due to the substantial peat areas, the pasture areas and activities of the cooperative are limited by the peat production sites.
There are seven round up fences. They also use transferable fences. There are at least 70 different fences around fields and their management requires lot of time.
People live mostly in the centre area of Ranua. Kuha and Simojärvi villages are also well habited. Almost all herders have also farms and forest farms.
