Poikajärvi reindeer herding cooperative is part of the Raudanjoki reindeer marking district. The cooperative is located to the northern part of Rovaniemi municipality. The cooperative borders in north with Alakylä and Syväjärvi, in east with Pyhä-Kallio, in southeast with Vanttaus, in south with Narkaus and in west with Palojärvi and Jääskö cooperatives.

60.1 % of the cooperative’s total area is state land and 39.9 % is owned by other landowners. The cooperative area abuts on the River Ounasjoki, which riverside belongs to the Natura 2000 area. There is a heavy trafficked Road 4 passing through the cooperative and causing plenty traffic accidents with reindeer. Someroharju garrison area and airport are located to the cooperative area.

There are around 30 different fences made for herding work. The amount is amongst the largest in the reindeer husbandry area. The cooperative does not have border or pasture area fences.

The cooperative is partially located to the Rovaniemi municipality habitant areas. The herders live evenly around the cooperative. Almost all herders are also landowners and have either farms or forestry farms.
