Tolva reindeer herding cooperative is part of the Itäkemijoki reindeer marking district. The cooperative is mainly located to the Posio municipality and small parts of it reach Kuusamo municipality. The cooperative borders in north with Salla, in east with Alakitka and Oivanki, in south with Akanlahti and in west with Posion Livo and Timisjärvi cooperatives.
22.0 % of the cooperative’s total area is state land and 78.0 % is owned by other landowners. There are three bigger protected areas: Riisitunturi National Park, Ritakorkia and Kätkytvaara Natura 2000 areas.
There are lot of farms and therefore fields in the area.
There are no border fences. There are seven immovable autumn round up fences around the cooperative. There are enough transferable fences.
Most of the people live in the centre of Posio. There are several villages in the area: Karjalaisenniemi, Mourunkylä, Kitka, Toilva and Suonnankylä. There are hundreds of holiday cottages, because there are so many waters in the area.
