Calves are born in the Spring

In the spring, the long dark winter and cold weathers are finally left behind. When the snow is hard, reindeer can walk on it and eat different type of lichens from ground or beard moss from the trees.

Female reindeer start to calve during May. When calving time gets closer some of the herders gather their female reindeer back to the fences and let them free after calving. However, most of the reindeer calve in the nature and move to their calving areas independently.
