Why do reindeer come to roads?<\/h2>\n

In the spring, when the snow melts from the roads, reindeer come to eat the new grass from the roadsides. When the blood-sucking insects drive reindeer in herds in June-July, reindeer go to roads again. Roads are usually open areas and hence there are not that many horseflies, midges or gnats. Also, the warmth of the road raises the carbon dioxide and warmth coming from the reindeer upwards. Then the insects cannot find their targets and reindeer will not have that much trouble.<\/p>\n

During the insect season, reindeer can make quick runs around to get rid of them. If they do it across the road, it may surprise the car driver completely, because it differs from the normal peaceful movements of a reindeer.<\/p>\n

Like other animals, reindeer are not afraid of motor vehicles. The drivers in Northern Finland should always take reindeer into consideration throughout the day. To the surprise of many, reindeer do not sleep through the night.<\/p>\n

During the winter, icy roads are salted and the salt attracts reindeer. They particularly like the salty water they can drink from the small holes in the road.<\/p>\n
