Protected Designation of Origin
Reindeer meat from Lapland (Lapin Poron liha), dried reindeer meat from Lapland (Lapin Poron kuivaliha) and cold-smoked reindeer meat from Lapland (Lapin Poron kylmäsavuliha) have been acknowledged in the EU level as traditional, high quality products. Hence they have been given the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) –status (EU scheme).
The products entitled for this status have been produced from reindeer that have been born and grown in the Finnish reindeer husbandry area. And their meat has been processed and packed in the area too.
The statuses are valid in the whole of EU. The aim of this EU scheme is to encourage diverse agricultural production, protect names from misuse and imitation. PDO is also a sign of quality. PDO covers agricultural products and foodstuffs which are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognised know-how.
