Ear Tag (piltta)

In some cases, since the 1970s, a reindeer has been extra marked with ear tags. These tags are useful for example when selling already earmarked, live reindeer. It can also be used to show that the reindeer is registered as a tourism or competing reindeer.

Ear tags ordered from the Association will be put into a registry. The owner can then be found on the basis of the ear tag. Tags ordered from elsewhere are not marked to any official registries.

Using ear tags originates from southern Norway, and the word piltta comes from Scandinavian languages (Swedish: bild, Norwegian: bilete, billede).
